“Segmenti” in Beach Sloth

Angelic with its heavenly hues, Giulio Aldinucci & Francis M. Gri deliver a synthesis of the real and the surreal with “Segmenti”. Utilizing field recordings to great effect the tasteful way that the duo works to let the sound evolve feels masterful. Without revealing too heavy a hand the duo lets the sound gracefully unfold in a bright and color fashion. Throughout the album, the duo allows for a great degree of flexibility, at some moments leading into almost a church-like choir, at others opting for a more industrial vibe. By letting so many styles into the mix the sound feels akin to being constantly in flux.By far the highlight of the album comes with the opener “Faglie”. From mere whispers the sound grows ever louder and more powerful. Wordless vocals come front and center into the shimmering sea of sound. Gradually the duo works to make this truly expand into the infinite. Eventually this all fades away revealing a glorious soothing drone which closes out the piece. Much more contemplative in tone is the careful arrangement of “Remnants” where the sound has such a gentle breezy feeling to it. With “Magma” the duo delves into a tragic sound, for the layers of distortion give the song a kind of tension. Slowly but surely this initial aggression is whittled away revealing the beauty beneath the blurred bursts of color. Commanding and rather stately with its powerful structure is the wall of sound approach of “Divisi” where everything comes together in such an elaborate manner.
Giulio Aldinucci & Francis M. Gri deliver a blissful world with “Segmenti”.
